BADAJOZ Badajoz, in central Spain, is a relatively simple, modern city, although under the Moors it was a major city of great importance. However, as a consequence of the civil war, and centuries of disputes with Portugal, it no longer retains its former grandeur. The Mueso Arqueologicio houses over 15000 pieces, from as far back as Paleolithic times, from around the province. Badajoz is home to a 13th century cathedral, which is a converted mosque and has one Renaissance, one Gothic and one Plateresque window. Badajoz has a population of 130,000 and inside its province is found
the capital of the Community of Extremadura, Mérida. The province
is the largest in Spain and covers an area of 8,500 square miles (21,757km²).
The town lies at an altitude of 614ft above sea level (186m) on a hillside
near where the rivers Rivillas and Guadiana meet. The Portuguese border
is only 4 miles from this castle dominated town. To find a great selection of accommodation, please visit our hotels in badajoz section. |
